Dalhousie

2039 mts above sea level, Dalhousie is spread over 13 kms. Fresh and peaceful atmosphere and healthy surroundings enchanted Lord Dalhousie, who founded this lovely town. The English visited this place for their vacations. The bungalows here are all made in the English style. Situated in the Dhauladhar mountain range on 5 mountains Dalhousie has thick forests of pine and deodar trees. Many picnic spots can be found here.

Places of Interest:

Punjpula: This place has five small bridges with streams flowing under them.  Punj means five and pul means bridge. Hence, its name. Famous revolutionary, Bhagat Singh's uncle's grave is one km from the post office.

Jandri Ghat: This place is a picnic spot . The palace of the former ruler of Chamba is found here. This picnic spot is surrounded by pine and deodar trees.

Dayan Kund: This peak is situated at 2745 mts. Three rivers Vyas, Ravi, and Chenab meet here. One can see all the three rivers from here. This is 10 kms. from Dalhousie.

Kalatop: 8.5 kms from Dalhousie this place is a peaceful spot away from the hustle and bustle of the city. You can arrive here by bus and walk back to Dalhousie in two hours. You can also stay in the forest rest house.

Khajiar: 22 kms from Dalhousie, one of the main attraction of Khajiar is a vast green meadow 15 kms long and 1km wide. Other attractions are the Khajiar temple, Khajiar lake and the golf course. The upper part of the temple of the local God is moulded in gold. It is worth spending two days in Khajiar.  Hotel Deodar is one of the state run hotels here. Telephone No: 233

Satdhara: Seven streams flow here. These streams are famous for curing many ailments. This place is situated on the Punjpula route at 2036 mts.  above sea level.

Tourist Season:   From April to November.

Clothing: Light woollen clothing in summer and heavy woollen in winter.

Shopping: Tibetan handicrafts like shawls, scarves, blankets and carpets can be bought from The Craft Centre, Gandhi Chowk, Himachal Handicraft Emporium. Slippers, woodwork items and dry fruits also can be purchased here.

Other important information.

Due to rains, from the end of June to mid September, roads may get damaged.

Beware. The local people sell a lot of items from Delhi, Ludhiana, and Saharanpur passing them off as from Tibet. Dry fruits are invariably very expensive. Hence,  it would be advisable to buy only those items that are not available anywhere else.

Travel Plans:  

Air
: The nearest airport is Jammu and Amritsar. Dalhousie is 188 kms from here. Bus or taxi's can cover the rest of the journey.

Rail: The closest railway station is Pathankot.

Road: Dalhousie is on NH 33-35, which is connected by a straight road to many cities. Punjab Roadways, Himachal Roadways and the J & K State Transport run buses from Pathankot, Jammu, Katra, Dharmasala, Shimla etc. Private tourist buses are also available.
