When did India got independence ?
India got independence from the British on 15th of August 1947. It was a hard earned freedom, which was gained at the cost of many martyrs, whose sole aim was to see their motherland free. Mahatma Gandhi was among the key leaders who revolutionized the freedom struggle through his practice of non-violence (satyagraha). It was one of these unique qualities of the great mahatma, which has chiseled a place for him in the hearts of the people world over even today.
Other key leaders who inspired and fought for India's freedom were….
Father of Indian Democracy
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar. He was born at a time when Mother India was under the clutches of the British rule. His famous satyagraha (non-violence) movement was instrumental in leading many great leaders to revolt against the British dictatorship.
Mahatma Gandhi tried hard to preach only what he practiced. He fought against many of the British legislations and unfair practices against the Indians. His salt march made headline news world over. His philosophy of "Be Indian Buy indian" gave life once again to the cottage industries of India. This act of the Great Mahatma helped to decrease the economic drain of the country and made the Indian people realize they were no more dependent on the British Government for their basic necessities. The British Government slowly but sturdily lost control over the Indian people.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi did everything humanly possible in his power to bridge the gap between the Hindus and Muslims. He tried to bring harmony between the two communities that had lived together successfully not so long before. However the rift that was created by the British was too deep. The division of India and Pakistan after the freedom created more blood shed and many more ill feelings between the two communities. Even today the politicians of India take advantage of these old feelings and have worked very successfully to continue to keep the communities apart. Hence Hindus and Muslims have never been able to live together in peace and harmony like they once did. Perhaps in the new generation of Indians many are able to make Gandhi's dreams of seeing a secular India into reality.
It was with sheer perseverance and patience, Gandhi lead the freedom struggle, which resulted in India's independence. He was assassinated on 30th January 1948 at Delhi. Indians honored him by calling 'Father of the Nation'.
