Chinese security chief completes tour of sacked Bo Xilai's volatile region to establish grip on power
Posted online: Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 9:48:53 PM

Beijing, May 20 : China's security chief, Zhou Yongkang, recently completed a tour of the volatile region of Xinjiang to establish his firm grip on power.

Though he had opposed the purging of an ambitious Politburo member Bo Xilai, Zhou later joined President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister for ceremony to honour police officials in the Great Hall of the People to show unity among Chinese leaders.

The event appeared to be aimed at quashing rumours that there has been a split in Communist Partyleadership, News York Times reports.

Zhou's tour took place at the same time when the World Uyghur Congress held a five-day gathering in Tokyo. However, it is unclear whether Zhou's tour was timed to coincide with the Uighur gathering.

Zhou traveled in Xinjiang visiting an army reserve training base, and emphasized the need to promote the development and long-term stability of the region.

Zhou's trip appeared to be an affirmation that he still held some control of China's expanding domestic security apparatus.

Zhou has many other interests in Xinjiang. He has held senior positions in China's oil industry and still has considerable influence in the area.
