Fire at steel plant in Vizag leaves at least nine dead
Posted online: Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 9:56:15 PM

Vizag, June 14 : At least nine people were killed and 11critically injured, after fire at the recently commissioned oxygen plant in the steel-melting unit of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) here left it completely gutted.

The injured were rushed to the hospitals and the death toll was likely to rise as many of them suffered 85-90 percent burns.

The impact of the blast was such that several cars parked outside the oxygen plant were flung 500 metres away from the plant.

At least 20 workers, including senior officials, were on duty when blast occurred.

The General Manager of the Steel Melting Shop, Yashpal Singh, said around seven injured were admitted in the hospital.

"We have brought three patients here. Two-three patients were already there, so there were around six-seven people, I think," Singh said.

The mishap, which occurred on Wednesday, is the third fire incident in less than two months.
