Manmohan Singh 'best man for Finance Minister's job', says Shahid Siddiqui
Posted online: Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 11:24:11 AM

New Delhi, July 11 : Amid reports that Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram may get charge of the finance ministry before Parliament's monsoon session beginning early next month, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Shahid Siddiqui on Wednesday said the Indian economy at the moment needs a person like Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who can make an impact and take major decisions.

"It is the prerogative of the Prime Minister to go for a reshuffle. But I believe that at this juncture, Dr. Manmohan Singh would be the best Finance Minister because he holds the authority, he has the knowledge, he has the experience and he can make an impact because we need somebody who can make an impact, who can take major decisions," said Siddiqui.

"Our economy doesn't need a surgery, it needs a major major operation and that major operation can be done by a person like Dr. Manmohan Singh. So, that should happen," he added.

The Prime Minister has been holding charge of the Finance Ministry since Pranab Mukherjee resigned on June 26 to contest the presidential election.

Chidambaram has held the Finance Ministry portfolio twice prior to his appointment as the country's Home Minister.

Moreover, recent statements of Chidambaram highlighting measures being taken to strengthen the economy has fuelled speculations that he may be given his earlier position once more.

"There are problems with inflation, with high fiscal deficit. There are problems with revenue deficit. There are problems in attracting investment. ut, we are confident that with the measures that have been taken, that are being taken and some measures that will be taken, we will get out of the trough and return to the high growth path," he told the media in Bangalore yesterday.

Chidambaram also expressed confidence that the economy will return to a path of high growth.
