When Mohammed Kaif was smashing away the New Zealand bowlers, his family preferred not to watch the live telecast until he neared his ton. In contrast, Sania Mirza's family enjoyed every moment of her winning streak in the US Open.

Kaif's parents and siblings in their hometown Allahabad preferred to watch television but not cricket. The cricketer's father Mohammed Tarif says he cannot bear the tension of seeing his son at the crease.

But as the Allahabad wonder reached the 90s, Tarif decided - for a change - to watch Kaif after all.

"When Kaif reached the 90s (Friday), I watched him score the last 10 runs," the father told IANS over telephone from Allahabad.

Asked why he chose to watch since there was no guarantee that Kaif would get the crucial runs, Tarif said: "My heart told me that he would get the 10 runs. After all, when one enters the 90s, there is always hope of a century."

Tarif, a 58-year-old former first-class cricketer, also said that he watched the highlights of the match later.

"My wife and I were at home but we did not watch Kaif's innings (102 not out)," he said. "But we did see the whole innings when he fielded."

But while they did not watch their son batting for the most of the time at the Videcon Triangular Series at Harare, Kaif's parents later witnessed Sania script Indian history by entering the pre-quarterfinals of the US Open in New York.

"Yes, we all watched her and what a match it was," gushed Tarif. "There is no comparison - she is the best Indian player and a big credit to her for the win."

Tarif disclosed that a few months ago he and his wife had a long talk with Sania when they met at the Taj Palace hotel in New Delhi.

The scene was entirely different at Sania Mirza's house at Hyderabad where every moment of her match-winning, third-round performance against Marion Bartoli of France 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
