New Delhi, July 23 Days after he launched a bitter attack on his party chief, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Madan Lal Khurana has suddenly turned cagey vis-à-vis L.K. Advani.

Khurana is neither willing to say if he sticks by the charges he made against Advani last week or if he was ready to back down.

"I cannot say anything, the media is distorting whatever I say," Khurana told IANS even as BJP office bearers Saturday held a meeting presided over by Advani.

Reminded about his assertion that he could not continue under Advani's leadership, Khurana clammed up, just two days after he had justified his diatribe saying he had the approval of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP's ideological mentor, when he sought Advani's resignation.

"I don't want to say anything right now. I will make my plans clear only in five or six days. I am talking to the leadership and only after that will I reveal my plans," said the former Rajasthan governor and former Delhi chief minister.

A rebellion against Advani by Khurana and other leaders prompted an embarrassed BJP to declare that action would be taken against them.

However, while talks are on to get Khurana to capitulate, the party is fighting shy of any strong action against the veteran known for his loose tongue.

Khurana, currently a member of the BJP national executive and in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Punjab, demurred when asked about the possibility of quitting if Advani did not step down.

"There is nothing like that. I am not quitting - this is all media speculation," he said.

Khurana asked Advani to quit as BJP president as well as the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, for "ruthlessly shredding" ideology and promoting a personality cult.

In a sharply worded letter, Khurana, a one-time loyalist, blasted Advani for eroding the RSS ideology that he said had taken BJP to new political heights.
