Abbas: A great
charmer with Dickensian propensities.

Q: You are a great charmer and the film
“Kadhal Desam” catapulted you to celebrity status; despite that launch
pad blockbuster, there was a great lull in your activity; why on earth did
it happen?
A:
One fine morning I found myself shot into prominence with the release of
“Kadhal Desam”. Even the receptionist of the hotel where I was put up
started behaving extra polite and was extra attentive after the film hit the
theatres. The world around me suddenly changed and the attitude of the
people changed drastically too. I couldn’t handle all the attention that
was showered on me. I was very much a normal person like any body else in
the crowd before I was made a celebrity.
Q:
You swear that you are a great fan of Amitabh Bachchan; why don’t you take
a cue from him and act in ‘angry young man roles’?
A: True, I haven’t signed an out and out action script till this day. I am
looking for meaningful scripts and donning meaningful roles. I would love to
grab a good action script if tabled.
Q:
You look so boyish; shall we say most of your fans are girlish?
A: Smiles broadly.
Q:
Could you recount your ‘Padyappa’ experience with Rajnikanth?
A: He is a nice human being. He taught me how to maintain my composure
when the going gets hard and how to face life and career with equanimity.
And how not to get elated or deflated by the constant flux of film career.
Q:
What other role an actor should play in the social milieu other than
entertaining the masses?
A:
He should practice charity, if and when the need to help his fellow human
beings arises. I am for uplifting the downtrodden and the underprivileged
section of the society. I do sympathize with the lot of the impoverished
class in Indian society. It’s my heart’s wish that I do something to
undo the injustice done to them.
Q:
Which is the one role that could be defined as your dream role?
A:
It should be out of the ordinary; my dream role should be a dreamy role, the
one that aims for the Utopia and works for the welfare society.
Q: Who is your favourite actor in Tamil movies?
A:
I like M.G.R’s energy and his social commitment, though I get to watch a
very few movies of him in T.V.
Q:
What is the most interesting feature of your fan mails?
A: One girl wrote to me saying that she is so desperate to get married to me
that she wouldn’t even mind me being a much-married man already.
Q:
What is beauty and how would you define it?
A:
Beauty is not skin-deep. It is rather a noble quality you find in a person.
Q: Imagine an ardent fan writes to you and begs you to sport a moustache;
will you do it for her sake?
A:
I have done it already. I appear with a moustache in some of my latest
films.
Q: Tell us about your foray in Hindi movies?
A:
Right now, I have signed up three Hindi movies with the top rung directors.
And I am about to sign a Hollywood film produced by an NRI.
Q:
What is your hobby?
A:
Earlier, I used to write poetry in English. Now... (he shrugs his shoulders)
Q:
Who is your favourite actress?
A:
Sridevi.
Q:
How do you unwind yourself, when you feel stressful?
A:
I take my car and drive down to a secluded place and call up my friend to
join me. Then I speak my heart out and get some good inputs from his side
and there ends the problem.
Q:
I feel you have got a strong feminine streak in you; do you?
A:
He looks with the corner of his eyes and smiles.
Q: Which one theatric attribute is strong in you?
A:
Comedy; I have got a strong sense of humour and people start giggling the
moment they see me in my real elements.
