Ashwin’s six-for spins India to Test series win against England

Mumbai [India],Dec.12 : Ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin scalped his 24th five-wicket haul and seventh 10-wicket haul as India thrashed England by an innings and 36 runs to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series at the Wankhede Stadium here on Monday.

Resuming at yesterday's score of 182-6, England fell prey to some classic off-spin bowling from Ashwin as they could only add 13 runs to their second innings before being bundled out for 195 runs.

Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts as he bagged six wickets in the second innings to end with the match figures of 12/167.

He also becomes the second-highest in the list of most 10-fors by an Indian in Tests behind legendary cricketer and current head coach Anil Kumble.

Earlier, India piled a respectable 631 runs in the first innings in reply to England's 400, taking a 231-run first innings lead.

Kohli, who was declared `Man of the Match` smashed a brilliant 235-run knock to become the first Indian skipper to score three double-tons in a year.

It was his first double century in Tests against England. He reached the milestone in 302 balls with 23 fours but no sixes. Kohli was ably supported by Jayant Yadav (104), who not also brought his maiden Test century but also shared a huge 241-run partnership with the skipper for the eighth wicket.

Jayant also became the first individual to score a century at the number nine spot. The victory was also Kohli's 13th win as Test captain putting him just behind limited-overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin.

By defeating the Alastair Cook-led side, India have now regained the Anthony de mello trophy which was with England after they won here in 2012.

India, who are now unbeaten for 17 matches in the longest format of the game, will now play the dead rubber fifth Test match against England beginning on December 16 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
