Asian Boxing C’ship : Shiva Thapa punches his way into quarters

Tashkent [Uzbekistan], May 2 : Indian boxer Shiva Thapa stormed into the quarter-finals of the Asian Boxing Championship after defeating Kyrgyzstan's Omurbek Malabekov in the Men's 60 kg weight category here on Tuesday.

World Championships bronze-medallist Thapa swept aside Malabekov in a split verdict to book his place in the last eight.

The 23-year-old will now lock horns with Chinese Taipei's Chu-En Lai for a place in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Sumit Sangwan, a former gold medallist at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, also made it to the quarter-finals of 91 kg category after knocking down Erdenebayar Sandagsuren of Mangolia.

Sumit will now face third-seeded Fengkai Yu of China for a place in the semi-finals. Earlier, Vikas Krishan (75 kg), Gaurav Bidhuri (56 kg) and Amit Phangal (49 kg) had also booked their places into the last eight of the tournament after winning their respective matches.
