Sarath Kumar

Sarath Kumar came, saw and conquered the  Tamil hearts.

Sarath-Kumar2Brawny Sarath Kumar, lovingly called as “Supreme Star”, has come to stay as an actor who appeals to the imagination of the urban and the rural film buffs alike. His career graph peaked phenomenally with super duper hits like “Nattamai” and “Suryavamsam”. If he has seen the flow of his career the ebb also followed with he accepting and acting in mediocre films.

Sarath was born in Delhi, his traditional village being ‘Thalakkavoor’, which nestles near Karaikkudi, in south Tamilnadu. His father M. Ramanathan had worked for All India Radio and then in Press Trust of India (P.T.I.).
Ramanathan practiced law prior to his switch over to journalism. Sarath was the third son of Ramanathan-Leelavathy couple. After completing his bachelors in Maths in New College, Chennai, Sarath started dreaming about his imminent entry into films. He started his film career as a producer. With actor Karthik as the hero, he plunged into the production of “Kan Simittum Neram” and “Mister Karthik”. He put up a brief appearance as a police officer in “Kan Simittum Neram”. But before all that, the actor, thirsting to make an impact, ran from pillar to post to get a foothold in films. But his efforts bore no fruits. Tenacious by nature, he didn’t budge and never retrieved a step from achieving his avowed goals, set in cinema.

Struggling and sustaining over a period of time, Sarath got his tryst with destiny. In the climax scene of “Pulan Visaaranai”, he clashed with Vijayakanth, exhibiting his enviable biceps. “ Who is this handsome, macho man?’ exclaimed the audience. It is rumoured that when Sarath Kumar and Vijayakanth were actually doing this scene both indulged in exchanging real blows, in order to give the scene a real feel. The scene was well-conceived and well shot by Selvamani and it gave a grand finale to a well-scripted film. At last, Sarath the actor has arrived.

Sarath-Kumar1Next, came “Suryan”. In this Sarath appeared with tonsured head. He had sacrificed his shack of hair for the role. The film set the box-office on fire and Sarath turned into a dependable actor. Films such as “Kattabomman”, “Cheran Pandian” and “Naattaamai” made him a darling of the women. The chart-busting “Suryavamsam” that came to screen in 1997, broke all the records in box-office collections throughout Tamilnadu.

Sarath Kumar has so far completed 75 films. He appears as a gold hearted, altruistic gentleman in most of his films. He practices charity in real life too. Through a trust founded in the memory of his father, he extends help in the areas of medi-care and education. He has also associated himself in sports promotion.

The benevolent actor built a hospital, with modern amenities, in Coimbatore to serve our fellow impoverished citizens.

Sarath Kumar came, saw and conquered. His nervous energy took him to heights in a very brief period. It is his fan’s heartfelt wish that he shouldn’t meddle in muddy politics and spoil his film career. Devoting time to hand picked good scripts like “Sooryavamsam” would certainly take him again to the top.

Shankar

Shankar’s prime weapon is his script writing skill.

shankar1In an industry, which is very difficult even to enter, it took Shankar just one movie to rise to the top. Introduced in producer K.T. Kunjumon’s “Gentleman” as Director in 1994, Shankar has so far directed just five movies in Tamil and one in Hindi. Yet, he is the most successful director in Kollywood today!

When Shankar approached K.T. Kunjumon for a chance to direct a movie, the burly producer immediately gave his approval, as he was in the habit of introducing new directors to the industry at that time. Utilizing the opportunity and determined to create a smash hit, Shankar began working hard on the script of “Gentleman”. He worked on the minute details of his first movie and employed the genius of the emerging A.R. Rahman (who had just made three movies until then) and cinematographer Jeeva. Arjun featured in the lead role. “Gentleman” turned out to be a mega hit at the box office. With fantastic songs, thrilling action sequences and a daring script, “Gentleman” became a trendsetter for the movies of the 90’s.

Unlike other commercial moviemakers, Shankar took his time to venture into his next movie. Backed once again by K.T. Kunjumon, he made “Kaadalan” introducing Prabhu Deva as hero for the first time. Naghma made her debut in Tamil in this film. Supported immensely by A.R. Rahman’s incredible musical score once again and K.T. Kunjumon’s lavishness in the production, “Kaadalan” too turned out to be a mega hit. Shankar’s name entered the ‘Top Directors’ list.

Shankar’s next project was A.M. Rathnam’s “Indian”, featuring “Padmashri” Kamal Hassan (in a dual role), Manisha Koirala and Urmila Matondkar. “Indian” was a sensational hit and was dubbed into Telugu and Hindi. Shankar got recognized all over the country, for his stunning script writing.

After three successful movies, Shankar started his next project, the Anand Amritraj and Dr. Murali Manohar production, “Jeans” featuring Prashant and Aishwarya Rai. The film was a mega budget one with extensive graphical extravaganza. Computer graphics was incorporated almost throughout the film for special visual effect of the dual roles, played not only by Prashant but also by the supporting artist Nazer and heroine Aishwarya Rai. Although the movie did well, thanks once again to Rahman’s magnetic music, it wasn’t really up to Shankar’s standards.

After “Jeans”, Shankar wanted to make his next movie really striking. He decided to produce it under his own banner “S Films” along with his friend Madhesh. ‘What would you do if you were made the Chief Minister for one day?’ This was the theme of his “Mudhalvan”. For such a daring script, the one person he wanted to play the lead role was ‘Superstar’ Rajinikanth. However, due to Rajinikanth’s hesitancy, Shankar cast Arjun in the film. “Mudhalvan” turned out to be a super hit and a spectacular delight to the audience with the story moving faster than a bullet! Shankar remade the movie in Hindi as “Nayak” featuring Anil Kapoor.

His next project has been titled “Robot” with Kamal Hassan. He has maintained complete secrecy about “Robot”, but the title suggests that it may well be a science fiction!

Shankar’s prime weapon is his skill in writing the script and the screenplay of the movie. Such deftness in script writing is unprecedented in Indian Film History. Moving the movie scene by scene with incredible speed is Shankar’s speciality.

Madhavan

Madhavan1Madhavan has in him, the charm that will always put others at ease. It is this charm of the boyish “Maddy” that makes him the most loved hero in Tamil cinema today. It was Manirathnam’s super hit “Alaipayuthey” that gave him a break in Tamil cinema. With the release of every new movie of his, more and more fans are falling in love with this talented Madhavan who today rules over the hearts of the young and the old alike.

Born to Tamil parents on 1st June 1970, Madhavan was brought up in Jamshedpur. As a child, Madhavan had no particular affinity towards movies. An electronics graduate from Shivaji University, Kolapur, he was selected by the Rotary International, to represent India as a Cultural Ambassador to Canada, when he was just 18! It is this tour to Canada that Madhavan considers as one of the important events of his life! After his tour to Canada, Madhavan was looking for a chance that would take him back to Canada. Realizing that the best NCC Cadets would be sent abroad, Madhavan enrolled in the NCC and emerged as the “Maharashtra Best Cadet” which took him to another trip abroad…to England, where he had training with the Royal Army, Navy and the Air Force.

Madhavan now decided that it was time for him to start making money. He learnt that one of the quickest ways to earn good money was to start a ten-day crash course on Public Speaking. His course was a super success and Madhavan soon turned out be one of the richest guys in college. It was in one of these classes that Maddy met his wife Sarita.

When one of his friends suggested Madhavan to try his hand on small screen, Maddy decided to give it a shot and visited Zee TV. He was instantly offered a role as a convict in “Yule Love Stories”. He was quickly spotted by the leading small screen producers and in a very short time, he bagged various roles — a captain in “Sea Hawks”, a convict in “Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum”, an anchor in “Tol Mol” and a role in “A Mouthful Of Sky”! The first role that Madhavan got to play was the character of Ashley in “Banegi Apni Baat”. “That role was initially an incidental character, only for an episode or two but pleased with my performance, the directors decided to make this character a regular feature. It is almost four years now and I am still in the serial and a regular at that.” The element of pride, however tiny, flashes across his face.

During one of his Hindi serial shoots, Madhavan got acquainted with Santosh Sivan, Mani Ratnam’s close associate and cinematographer, and after two years of calling Mani Ratnam, he was finally summoned and offered the lead role in “Alaipayuthey”! With the release of “Alaipayuthey”, Madhavan has risen to absolute stardom. And with the coming of the recent super hit “Minnale”, he is being called the “Hrithik of Tamil Movie Industry”!

Madhavan2Madhavan makes his debut as a hero in Hindi movies in “Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein”, the Hindi remake of “Minnale”. Apart from starring in K. Balachander’s “Paarthaaley Paravasam”, his forthcoming movies include Mani Ratnam’s “Manjal Kudai”, in addition to “Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar” and “Accham Thavir”!

The 5’11” actor’s favourite actors are Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Al Pacino, Sanjeev Kumar, Kamal Hassan and Rajnikanth, and favourite actresses include Manorama, Whoopi Goldberg and Helen Hunt. His philosophy in life is “Live life to the fullest and relish every moment of existence”. He loves “Pani Poori” and “Curd Rice”.

Madhavan wants to do a role that is as real as possible as in “Cast Away”, in which a man has lost 30Kg for the sake of a film and genuinely portrayed the plight of the character. “To concentrate on one film and give as realistic a performance as possible is my dream. Unfortunately, in India, while making a film, we have to put in all the ‘safety plugs’ like song sequences and things I would ideally not be associated with, ” he says.

Tata Steel considers alternatives for sale of specialty units

New Delhi, July 9 : Tata Steel has decided to cancel the sale of its assets in the country after months of negotiation with worker unions and the UK Government. The company in its board meeting decided not to divest majority of its UK steel business because of the Brexit uncertainty. However, the company has now entered into preliminary talks with Germany’s Thyssenkrupp for a joint venture. The success of the joint venture depends on the outcome of talks with British trade unions, government policy support and developments on workers’ pension schemes, the company said. Tata Steel intends to cut costs by 100 million euros as it goes ahead with continuing business in the UK. Earlier in March, the company had announced the sale of its entire UK business, which employs about 15,000 workers. The business is part of the Corus acquisition that Tata undertook in 2007. Back then, the company said that a turnaround plan was unaffordable. The announcement came after UK’s business secretary Sajid Javid met Tata Steel representatives in Mumbai earlier on Friday to discuss the future of the company’s UK assets.
