Kolkata, June 1 : Coal India Ltd (CIL) on Friday said its production during May grew by 16 per cent over the corresponding month last year and its off-take also increased by 14 per cent for the month over the year-ago period despite concerns over shortage of coal supply in power plants.
The miner, however, missed both production and off-take targets for the month by 8 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively.
According to provisional data, CIL produced 47.14 million tonnes of coal in May, achieving 92 per cent of its target of 51.16 million tonnes for the month.
The company had produced 40.74 million tonnes in May, 2017.
The miner produced 91.99 million tonnes of coal during the first two months of the current fiscal registering a growth of 16.2 per cent.
But again, it missed the production target of 97.99 million tonnes for April-May by six per cent.
The coal behemoth reported that its off-take during May was at 52.86 million tonnes, missing the target of 58.18 million tonnes for the month.
The miner's off-take in May, 2017 was at 46.41 million tonnes.
Its off-take during the April-May period of the current fiscal was at 103.84 million tonnes achieving a growth of 13.4 per cent.
It, however, missed the off-take target by 10 per cent during the April-May period of the current fiscal.
Coal India is looking at a coal despatch target of 630 million tonnes in 2018-19.
Of this around 525 million tonnes would be the estimated coal supply to the power sector.
In 2017-18, Coal India has registered a total despatch of 580 million tonnes of which supply to the power sector was 454 million tonnes a year on year growth of 7 per cent.
