Congress demands RBI Governor’s resignation

New Delhi [India], Jan. 18 : The Congress Party on Wednesday demanded RBI Governor Urjit Patel's resignation and asked the government to normalise currency withdrawal limits.

"The RBI, for the first time since independence, has lost its autonomy and has become a rubber stamp of the government.

We want the government to restore the autonomy of the RBI and if it is not done, then the RBI governor must resign," Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

He added that a memorandum was submitted at the RBI headquarters in Mumbai demanding the same. He asked the government to take responsibility of the loss of lives caused by demonetisation. "The government introduced a wrong policy, because of which, 125 crores citizens had to suffer in of ATMs and banks for few months, and till now, the government has been unable to find a solution.

Many people have lost their lives. So, someone from the government has to take responsibility," Azad said. Earlier, several Congress workers picketed before 25 Reserve Bank of India (RBI) offices across the country, in protest against demonetisation.

Highlighting the plight of the common people due note ban, Congress leaders alleged that demonetisation had failed to weed out black money from the economy and eliminate the ill-gotten wealth converted into assets such as gold and real estate.
