David Mackenzie, Pete Berg frontrunners to helm ‘Scarface’ reboot

Los Angeles [USA], Feb.11 : Few days ago,it was announced, the Brian De Palma directorial gangster film 'Scarface,' which gave us an iconic character like Tony Montana, will be getting a reboot.

Now, it looks like, the project is in good hands as Universal studios may have found the right guys to helm the project.

Universal executives have been meeting 'Hell or High Water' director, David Mackenzie and Pete Berg, the director of 'Deepwater Horizon' for helming the epic gangster reboot, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Mackenzie and Berg are setting up an interesting competition of sorts. Pete has a good relationship with the studio as he directed 'Battleship' and 'Lone Survivior' under their banner.

He also acted as Mackenzie's boss, when Berg hired him for directing 'Commancheria,' which was later titled 'Hell or High Water'.

David tried to get to 'Scarface' director seat, but was passed over, with the studio settling on experienced Fuqua.

The reboot is a modern day story, set in Los Angeles, and focuses on a Latino gangster. 'Fargo' filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen did a recent polish on the script. The movie is dated to release on August 10, 2018 and will feature Diego Luna in the titular role..
