Gasquet eager to make it to top 10 again

Johannesburg [South Africa], Dec.16 : French tennis player Richard Gasquet, who is currently ranked 18th, has revealed that his aim in 2017 will be to once again break into the top 10 players of the world.

The 30-year-old has been hounded by injuries this season, having missed the Australian Open, Davis Cup quarter-finals and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Although Gasquet managed to make it to the last eight at the Roland Garros, he fell in the fourth round of Wimbledon and the opening round of the US Open that saw him drop to 18th on the rankings at the end of the season.

"I left the top 10. I could not play Rio Olympics and the Davis Cup quarter-finals due to injuries. But it's doable. I won two titles, I reached Roland Garros quarter-finals and Wimbledon fourth round,"Sport24 quoted Gasquet as saying.

Gasquet, however, did secure two titles this year at the ATP Open Sud de France and ATP European Open.

Talking about the upcoming year, the French insisted his priority would be to remain injury-free in order to be ready for the grand slams.

"My priority is to stay injury-free in order to be more consistent and be ready in the Grand Slams. I want to do better," he said. Gasquet will start his 2017 season alongside Kristina Mladenovic at the Hopman Cup beginning from January 1.
