Gold haul seized in Bengal, 2 held

Kolkata, June 7 : BSF personnel seized two gold bars and six gold biscuits worth around Rs 84 lakh in two separate raids in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district and arrested two Indian smugglers, a BSF official said on Thursday.

Acting on a tip off, Border Security Force (BSF) troopers on Wednesday laid an ambush in North 24 Pargana district's Haridaspur-Kalyani area and arrested a man coming towards Haridaspur village on a boat.

"The suspected smuggler named Kamal Majhi, 48, was arrested by the BSF.

Two gold bars weighing approximately 2 kg and worth Rs 62.38 lakh were seized from him," DIG, South Bengal Frontier, Prabhat Kumar Singh, said in a release.

In the other case, a BSF trooper of border outpost Amudia of the same district arrested another suspect coming from the Bangladesh side and seized gold from him.

"Babulal Biswas, 42, a resident of Amudia village was arrested while illegally crossing into Indian territory from Bangladesh on Wednesday afternoon.

Four gold biscuits and two gold bars worth Rs. 22.27 lakh were seized from him," a BSF officer said.

The BSF command have seized over 10 kg of smuggled gold worth Rs 3.27 crore and have arrested four gold smugglers in 2018.
