Lanka to establish ‘Independent Media Commission’

Colombo, July 28 : Sri Lanka's Minister of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Gayantha Karunathilake on Thursday said the country will soon establish an Independent Media Commission after arriving at a consensus with the heads of the media institutions, journalists, academics and public.

Briefing the press at the Department of Government Information, Karunathilake said the new commission would not be enforced on journalists at all.

Deputy Minister Karunaratne Paranavithana joining the occasion highlighted there is a very bad situation regarding the country's media sector and it cannot be kept unregulated.

"It is required to bring up new rules and laws. The proposed independent commission is currently preparing a concept paper," the Colombo Page quoted Paranavithana as saying.
