New Delhi, Jan 31 : Mumbai Police's tweets on toxic honking behaviour set the microblogging site abuzz on Friday.
The tweet read: "Horn not okay, please! Find out how the @MumbaiPolice hit the mute button on #Mumbai's reckless honkers.
"HonkResponsibly", the initiative started by the Mumbai police is a visual reminder of continuous honking and shined a mirror at people's actions in a way that made them aware of their toxic honking behaviour.
The theme of the video is "Feel free to honk, if you don't mind waiting."
The video started as: "Welcome to the honking capital of the world.
Here, people honk even when the signal is red. Maybe they think that by honking, they can make the signal turn green faster?" After that the video shows, "We, the Mumbai Police, were itching to do something about this.
Introducing, 'The Punishing Signal'."
Then the video showed that the Mumbai police, "One day connected decibel meters to a few signal poles around the city.
The locations were CSMT, Marine Drive, Peddar Road, Hindmata, Bandra."
The interesting thing about the decibel meter is that "If the decibel levels went over 85 dB, the signal would reset and stay red for longer." The post by Mumbai police got retweeted more than 3K times, garnering hundreds of comments.
A user wrote: "Good idea.
Please implement in all of Mumbai. Only way to make people aware. However, also fine people for honking."
Another wrote: "@KolkataPolice- urge you to do something similar, please.
While traffic in Kolkata is definitely smoother, the honking is a disgrace. Especially by the buses - both private and state owned." A post read: "What an innovative idea.... Unbelievable...Hats off to you Mumbai Police."
A Tweeple remarked, "Honking is not the problem, it is a reaction to the actual problem, which is people driving out of lane, on phone, reckless or too slow etc.
Honking saves life, very often."
