SMEV welcomes NGT order diesel vehicles

New Delhi, July 18 : The Society of Manufactures of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) on Monday welcomed the step taken by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to ban the diesel vehicles which are 10 years old and running in the streets of Delhi. In a statement, the SMEV said, "We feel that time has come for the government to take some firm steps like these in combating the ever increasing pollution levels. Something similar can be easily done in deregistering the polluting petrol two wheelers used in and E-Commerce Business Deliveries and that will greatly impact the pollution levels." IT further stated that there are over 21,00,000 two-wheelers engaged in commercial sector in India, running daily in the streets generating massive emission of CO2. It said, "To fight atmospheric pollution, the fossil fuel driven two wheelers must be replaced by those powered by battery (e.g. E-Bikes), which are environment friendly and also help the country stop its growing carbon footprints." Earlier in the day, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered the Road Transport Office (RTO) of Delhi to de-register all diesel vehicles over 10 years old.
