Trump administration cancels Michelle Obama’s programmes

Washington (Washington) [U.S.], May 2 : The Trump administration struck off two of former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama's programmes.

The cancelled programmes aimed to resolve grassroot level problems faced by girls in underdeveloped countries around the world and promoted healthy eating in the U.S.

schools. 'Let Girls Learn', one of the two programmes, was started in 2015 by the former First Lady with the aim of "leveraging public-private partnerships and challenging others to commit resources to improve the lives of adolescent girls worldwide." Administered by the Peace Corps in 44 countries, the programme announced (Dollar) 5 mn in new private sector commitments, last October.

Agency's acting director Sheila Crowley's email to employees said, "Moving forward, we will not continue to use the 'Let Girls Learn' brand or maintain a stand-alone program," The Guardian reports.

Obama's initiative for healthy eating, 'Let's Move!', which aimed at reducing child obesity and set health standards in school cafeteria lunch, was also scrapped.

"If kids aren't eating the food and it's ending up in the trash, they aren't getting any nutrition, thus undermining the intent of the program," The Guardian quoted Sonny Perdue, Trump's agricultural secretary, at a school in Leesburg, Virginia, as saying.

Earlier, health and environment policies like the Clean Water policy, laid down by the former administration, were also scrapped.
