Ankara shooting: U.S. shuts its embassy and consulates for a day

Ankara [Turkey], Dec. 20 : The United States embassy in Ankara and its consulates in Istanbul and Adana will be closed on Tuesday after an individual approached the embassy's main gate and discharged a firearm.

The incident happened hours after the Russian ambassador was shot dead nearby by an off-duty policeman.

The embassy said there have been no reported injuries in the incident and the individual who opened fire was in police custody.

The U.S. Mission reminded American citizens to review personal security plans, ensure communication connectivity, to remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and to monitor local news for breaking events.

The embassy also asked its citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.

The embassy advised its citizens that the immediate security incident near the embassy in Ankara was over and recommended them to avoid the area due to the ongoing police activity.
