Gangaur

30th March 2017

Gangaur is an important local festival of Rajasthan. The spring festival of Gangaur honours Gauri, the goddess of abundance. Girls dress up in finest clothes and pray for a spouse of their choice. Married women pray for the happiness of their husbands.

Gangaur is celebrated in Rajasthan with magnificent fervor; festivities in Jaipur and Udaipur have a unique appeal and magic. The festival is also celebrated with immense display in Bikaner, Jodhpur, Nathdwara and Jaisalmer.

Right through the previous fortnight, girls worship the goddess. Vivid images of Gauri, brilliantly dressed and ornamented, are taken out in procession.

A boat procession in Pichola Lake adds to the gaiety of Udaipur celebrations. Thousands of people from the countryside come to take part in the procession.

The tribals have a custom that is typical and out of the ordinary. The youth get a chance to select their partner and they marry by eloping! This is nevertheless allowed by the society.
