Banwarilal Purohit swears-in as new Assam Governor

Guwahati, Aug. 22 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Banwarilal Purohit was sworn-in as the Governor of Assam here on Monday in a glittering ceremony graced by dignitaries.

Purohit was administered the oath of office and secrecy by the Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court at the Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhawan here.

Assam had been under a caretaker Governor since December 2014 with Nagaland Governor P B Acharya in dual charge After Bapuji Aney, who held the charge of Bihar from 1948 to 1952, Purohit is the second Nagpurian to become a governor.

"Assam is the gateway to North-East and therefore it is an important state. I will discharge my responsibility in a non-partisan manner," he had said after his appointment. Purohit was a three-time Lok Sabha MP from the Nagpur, twice as a Congressman and once as a BJP party member.
