Celebration erupts as Fiji rugby team clinch first-ever Olympic gold

Johannesburg, Aug 12 : Fiji erupted into wild celebration after their Sevens rugby team clinched the South Pacific nation's first ever Olympic gold medal in the ongoing quadrennial event in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.

The Fijian team etched their names in the history books as they outplayed Great Britain 43-7 in the finale, sparking euphoria in the tiny island nation with dancing in streets, work forgotten and schoolwork abandoned.

Reflecting on the historic triumph, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said that Fijians were rejoicing around the world, adding that the country's spirit had never soared so high and never stood so tall as a nation before, Sport24 reported.

Celebration had begun when Fiji were assured of a medal after defeating Japan 20-5 in the semifinals.
