China, Russia working on strengthening ‘strategic cooperation’

Astana [Kazakhstan], April 21 : Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday stressed further strengthening strategic cooperation with Russia to play a constructive role seeking political settlement for international hot issues.

Meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing Foreign Ministers meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Wang, in a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, also noted that China supported Russia's proposal to investigate the chemical weapons attack in Idlib, Syria, earlier this month, reports Xinhua.

In addition, China and Russia both insisted on resolving the nuclear issue in the Korean Peninsula through dialogue, Wang said.

The major task for the two countries at the moment, Wang said, is to prepare for Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming visit to China, during which he will attend the two-day Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation slated for mid-May.

For his part, Lavrov said that Russia and China bear special responsibility in maintaining international peace and that they cannot let hegemony and unilateralism dominate the management of international crises.

Expressing the hope for enhancing high-level communication between the two countries, Lavrov said Russia is willing to take the Belt and Road forum as an opportunity to further align the Russia-led Eurasian Customs Union with the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.
