First husband of British-Pakistani woman confesses of murdering her

Jhelum (Pakistan), Aug. 13 : The first husband of a British-Pakistani woman who was strangled to death last month on Saturday confessed of killing her.

Mohammad Shakeel confessed to the police of killing Samia Shahid by strangling her to death with her own dupatta, reports the Express Tribune.

Reports suggest that a local court in Jhelum rejected Shakeel's bail application while directing the police to arrest and present him before the court.

28-year old Samia, from Bradford, was killed while visiting her family in northern Punjab last month. Samia's second husband, Mukhtar Syed Kazam, said he believed his wife was killed because her family disapproved of their marriage.

He also alleged that Samia was tricked into travelling to Pakistan over claims that her father was ill.

Kazam, in his police complaint said his wife Samia was murdered during a visit to her family on July 20.

He described his wife's death as an "honour killing", a practice which has escalated in the country where a relative is murdered for bringing what is deemed dishonour to the family.

Earlier, the victim's father denied the charge and claimed his daughter died of natural causes. Last week, at an emotional press conference, Kazam presented a copy of a post-mortem report which said that his wife had marks on her neck, suggesting she had been strangled.

The Police said the forensic report confirmed Samia's dead as an unnatural one..
