Former marathon runner backs Sakshi Malik, says Haryana govt. harassing athlete

New Delhi [India], Mar. 05 : Backing Sakshi Malik over her recent claim against the Haryana Government, former marathon runner Sunita Godara on Sunday said the government not fulfilling its promises is like harassing the athlete.

"When they make announcement, then they should think. If they don't have money then don't announce. And if you have money and you are not giving to the athlete, it is too much then. This is only harassing the athlete, that also an Olympic medallist," Godara told ANI. Godara further said that the government should pay money to Malik with interest. The Rio Olympic bronze medallist yesterday lashed out at Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel, Haryana's Sports Mnister Anil Vij and Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for not delivering on their promises made after her incredible feat in the Rio Olympics.

The BJP-led Haryana Government had announced a financial award of Rs 2.5 crores as well as a government job for Sakshi after her Rio feat.

The state government had also declared that she would be appointed the Wrestling Director at Maharshi Dayanand University in her native Rohtak.

Chief Minister Khattar had also announced Malik as the brand ambassador of the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' initiative in Haryana.

However, by the looks of it, it doesn't seem that the state government has delivered on their performance.

"Medal ka vada maine pura kiya, Haryana sarkar apna vada kab pura karegi? (I fulfilled my promise of winning an Olympic medal for the country, when will Haryana government fulfil its promise?)," tweeted Sakshi.

"Announcements made by Haryana Government after my OLYMPIC MEDAL win were for MEDIA ONLY ?.(2/2)@cmohry @anilvijminister @VijayGoelBJP," she added.

Sakshi become the first woman wrestler in India to win an Olympic medal with her bronze in the 58 kilogram freestyle event.
