Grasim’s Jaya Shree Textiles division in Bengal declares lockout

Kolkata, June 25 : Grasim Industries said its Jaya Shree Textiles Division at West Bengal's Rishra area in Hooghly district declared a lockout from June 25 and it would continue till further notice.

The unit has been facing "labour disturbances" and workers had called a flash strike on June 4 from second shifts onwards on account of "disciplinary action taken by the management against few workmen", the company earlier said in a regulatory filing.

"..we wish to inform you that the company's Jaya Shree Textiles Division at Rishra has issued a notice to all its employees declaring a lockout at the said division with effect from June 25, 2018 and shall continue till further notice," it said in a regulatory filing on Monday.

The lock-out, however, will not have any material impact on the overall business of the company, it further said.

In a statement in last December, Jayashree Textiles, a unit of Aditya Birla Group, had said labour disturbances worsened during the past three years.

The unit faced a flash strike in May 2017, accompanied by "hooliganism, illegal confinement of managers, destruction of property, violence and arson", it added.

Pursuant to the acts of violence and illegal strike, nine workmen against whom there was credible evidence of instigation of violence, arson and illegal strike, were placed under suspension pending enquiry, the company earlier said.

Subsequently, the management of the company, after considering all materials on record including the findings of the enquiry proving them guilty of the charges, had dismissed them from service on December 1, 2017.

"These 9 workmen were found guilty of charges of hooliganism, violence, riotous and disorderly behaviour and instigation of illegal strike..," it had said.
