New Delhi [India], Nov 21 (ANI-NewsVoir): The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) hosted its 5th Annual Convocation on Monday, 21st November, 2016 at their campus.
Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered the Convocation address.
The ceremony was presided over by Prof. S.K. Das, Director and Lila Poonawalla, Chairperson, Board of Governors - IIT Ropar. 130 students were felicitated with graduate and post-graduate degrees by the honorable chief guest. Out of this, 112 graduated in B. Tech and 18 in PhD. Four students also received special awards. Gaurav Mittal Computer Science and Engg received President of India Gold Medal, Amogh Agrawal Elec. Engg received Director Gold Medal and Institute Silver Medals were received by Nekkanti Akhil, Mechanical Engg and Amogh Agrawal, Electrical Engg for their outstanding performance during the academic sessions.
Encouraging students to be the next leaders and achievers, the Chief Guest Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India said, "21st Century is the century of knowledge and India is strongly investing in higher education to help India's march towards becoming a major knowledge and economic super power.
The world is moving with an accelerated pace towards technology led economic growth. Thus, the establishment of new IITs has been essential to leverage the demographic advantage to technology led development and growth.
It has been really delightful to see IIT Ropar feature among the top engineering institutions in the country and we hope that IIT Ropar will continue to establish its mark by solving some of the complex challenges that leverage the best of global science for developing locally relevant technology solutions.
It has been heartening to see IIT Ropar focus on contemporary national and societal aspirations and priorities.
Whether it be focus on water resources, soil usage, food preservation, soil conservation or bio-medical instrumentation and cancer research, IIT Ropar has shown commitment to cutting-edge engineering education and research." Addressing the gathering, The Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Ropar, Padmashree Lila Poonawalla said "My Wholehearted congratulations and my very best wishes to the young graduates and those who are going to receive their doctoral degrees today.
With the changing times and the fast-changing technology, there is an urgent need for innovation, not only in products and services, but also in our very own life.
I wish the students for the exciting journey ahead of them and hope that their journey up the ladder of excellence brings glory to them, their families, the institute and the country.
I would also like to congratulate all the faculty and students for their exceptional work and efforts that has brought us the 9th position in the 2016 NIRF Rankings of MHRD." IIT Roparbeing one of the new IITs has been awarded 9th position in the (NIRF) rankings this year and has also proved to be excellent in teaching and research at an International level.
IIT Ropar has also made a mark on its infrastructure and was recently awarded 5 star GRIHA rating for the master-plan of its upcoming campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. S.K Das, Director, IIT Ropar said "IIT Ropar is on a path of fascinating growth. For us it has been an exciting year of planning, expansion achievements and renewed hopes. From its strength of 800 students, it is going to grow to 2500 students within a span of 3 years, with a number of new departments such as Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Material Engineering coming up.
The institute is building a State-of-The-Art campus on the banks of the river Sutlej, with emphasis on Human Resources.
It has increased its faculty strength by 50 percent in the last one and a half years and is going to maintain a ratio of 1 faculty member for every 10 students every year.
We are proud to have been ranked 9th among the engineering institutions of the country in the 2016 National rankings conducted by the National Institutional Rankings Framework.
We have also achieved an average citation per paper of 5.96 as per the 2016 SCOPUS data and this is among the highest in the country.

18 PhD scholars have successfully defended their theses and 87 scholars have joined the PhD programme since last year.
This year, as many as 193 papers have been published in various high-impact international journals and the Average Citation Per Paper (ACPP) is 5.96 as per 2016 SCOPUS data.

48 Lakhs Dr. Rajendra Srivastava has been recognized as a leading author, ranked 6th in Chemistry and 7th in Chemical Engineering areas.
Overwhelming response from industry was seen for campus recruitment process as result of which 80 % of our students were placed.
More than 90 % of the Computer Science students and close to 60 % of the Mechanical Engineering students have been offered positions in core-technical organizations.
An average package of over 12 lakhs per annum was offered to students this year, an increase of 10 % compared to the previous year The organizations that participated in the final placement included premier companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Paypal, Arista Networks, Tata Motors, Mahindra (and) Mahindra, Larsen (and) Toubro, Cognizant.

PSUs like Coal India Limited participated in the recruitment process Developments and Focus at IIT Ropar The Institute shall have strength of 1200 students by 2017, when we move to our main campus and 1800 students by 2018 and we target a strength of more than 2500 students by the year 2019.
The institute has already initiated new academic programs: Civil Engineering Department from session 2016 with an intake of 25 students Chemical Engineering Department is going to start from 2017 session Centre for Bio-Medical Engineering is going to have an M.Tech.
Programme in 2017 The Institute has sanctioned various Interdisciplinary research grants of Rs. 16.55 Crores to various research groups working in niche areas like Sensors, Solar Thermal, Robotics, Micro (and) Nano Fabrication, Cancer Diagnostics and Therapy, and Biomedical Imaging The Institute has collaborated with various international Universities and Research Laboratories such as The State University of New York at Binghamton, New York, Cardiff University, etc and signed MOUs with them in order to develop strong academic and research collaborations The Institute also collaborated with Industry leaders like Sutlej Motors, ABB India Ltd., SML ISUZU, Coatings-mantra, Cheema Boilers, CYIENT Ltd., Infosys Ltd., Panacea Biotec The institute has a significant amount of funding to support incubation and start-up activities from DST, DEITY and PTU.
It has also constituted a Council of Educational Associates, comprising technical educational institutions of the region as its members.
