London [U.K], Nov. 15 : Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of the upcoming England's year-ending friendly against Spain due to a knee injury.
Rooney sat out training yesterday with a minor injury, alongside left-back Ryan Bertrand, and it has now been confirmed that he would head back to the Old Trafford for further tests, goal.com reported.
Earlier, England interim manager Gareth Southgate had confirmed that Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson would lead the team against the 2010 world champions at Wembley on Tuesday.
Bertrand, who was also absent from the session prior to the game, would be assessed before kick-off, while Southgate would also be without the Tottenham striker Harry Kane due to an ankle problem.
It now remains to be seen whether Rooney, who stuttered with form this season, would manage to regain his fitness ahead of United's Premier League clash against Arsenal this weekend.
Meanwhile, Spain could also suffer an injury blow after manager Julen Lopetegui had revealed they could be without David Silva for Tuesday's clash.
