Main accused of Park Street rape case arrested in Greater Noida

Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], Sept. 30 : Kolkata Police on Friday arrested the main accused involved in the 2012 Kolkata Park Street rape case who has been absconding for past four years.

The victim was gangraped in a moving car on the intervening night of 5, 6 February 2012 by five men who offered her lift to her home from a night club situated on Park Street.

Last year, a sessions court in Kolkata held all five of the accused guilty. The accused-Sumit Bajaj, Ruman Khan and Naseer Khan have already been convicted by the court. The victim, who survived the gangrape, died in March, 2015 following multiple organ failure caused by about of encephalitis.

Last year, in December, the West Bengal Government removed, Special Public Prosecutor Sarbani Roy from the Park Street gangrape case for not consulting the state government over the quantum of punishment and also for not demanding the maximum punishment for three of the five accused in the 2012 case.

Roy had allegedly told the court that the convicts were not directly involved in the actual crime and should be given a minimum punishment of ten years in jail.
