Parthiv Patel’s sparkling ton leads Gujarat to maiden Ranji Trophy title

Indore [India], Jan.14 : Wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel struck a scorching century as Gujarat clinched their maiden Ranji Trophy title with a comfortable five-wicket win over Mumbai on the last day of the final match here at the Holkar Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Resuming at yesterday's score of 47-0, Parthiv smashed 24 boundaries in his 143-run knock besides sharing a huge 116-run stand with Manprit Juneja for fourth wicket to help Gujarat chase down the target of 313 runs.

For Mumbai, Balwinder Sandhu bagged two wickets while Shardul Thakur, Abhishek Nayar and Akhil Herwadkar also chipped in with a wicket each.

Earlier, Abhishek Nayar's late burst of 91, which included five sixes and five fours, along with vital contributions from Shreyas Iyer (82), Aditya Tare (69), and Suryakumar Yadav (49), propelled Mumbai to 411 in their second innings.

For Mumbai, the last two wickets put on 85 runs, with the Nayar scoring majority of it. Mumbai were aiming to clinch the coveted trophy for the 42nd time. Parthiv was adjudged `Man of the Match` for his brilliant performance with the bat. It was for the second time Parthiv smashed a century to inspire Gujarat to glory. Earlier in December 2015, he struck his maiden List A century to steer the state to their first domestic 50-over championship win.
