New York [United States], Apr. 8 : Asserting that military action will not work, Chinese Permanent Representative to the UN, Liu Jieyi has said that only a political solution can solve the Syrian issue.
Speaking at a UN Security Council emergency meeting that was convened after the United Sates launched missile attacks on a Syrian military airfield, Liu said military action will make the situation in Syria more complicated and turbulent and also worsen the suffering of the people of the country.
"This is not in the common interest of Syria, regional countries and the international community," Chinese state owned Xinhua news agency quoted Liu as saying.
"The most urgent issue at present is that all parties work together to prevent the situation in Syria from further deterioration," he added.
Liu said China calls upon all relevant parties to persist in diplomatic efforts, stick to dialogue and consultation and support the role of the United Nations as the main channel of mediation and good offices.
He also asked the international community to support the efforts of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to maintain the hard-won momentum for the political solution to the Syrian issue.
The United States had on Thursday launched a military strike on the military base in response to their chemical weapon attack on the civilians few days before.
