SC approves a Pollution Code for Delhi-NCR

New Delhi [India], Dec 2 : In an endeavour to put a check on pollution level in the national capital, the Supreme Court on Friday approved a Pollution Code and asserted all concerned agencies to take a note of it.

The code is classified into four categories, moderate to poor, very poor, severe, very severe or emergency.

The Apex Court three judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Tirath Singh Thakur, accepted the submissions made by all parties and asked the Centre to notify the level of four categories of pollution level.

The apex court will hear the matter in the third week of January 2017. The Supreme Court on Thursday November 18 had directed framing and submission of graded response action plan for various categories of National Air Quality Index.

The apex court also directed the Centre to ascertain harmful effects of petro coke and furnace oil. Pollution Code is said to have measures such as introduction of odd-even scheme, consider shutting schools, etc if pollution level is very severe.
