Dhaka, Aug. 9 : A court in Bangladesh's Gazipur district on Tuesday sentenced six people to death and three others to life-term imprisonment for killing a schoolboy in 2001.
The convicts have been identified as Rafiqul Islam, Atiqul Islam, Atique Sheikh, Selim Sheikh, Anwar Hossain Sheikh and Nayan Sheikh of Ghagtia village in Kapasia upazila, reports the Daily Star.
The convicts have also been fined Tk 5,000 in another count of offence in the case. Those who have sentenced life term are Anwara Begum, Abdul Motaleb and Samsuddin of the same village. The prosecution said 19- year-old Sanaullah Sarkar was strangled to death on February 9, 2001 after he had developed an affair with the daughter of Anwara Begum.
Sarkar's brother Asaduzzaman filed a case against 12 people with the Kapasia Police Station on the following day.
The police later submitted chargesheet against the nine people. Additional District and Sessions Judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiya handed down the verdict in presence of all the convicts in the dock after hearing witnesses and examining the records.
