‘Swachh mela’ organised in Assam’s Jorhat district

Jorhat (Assam)[India], Apr. 7 : In a bid to spread awareness about the importance of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,' Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has organised a one-day district level 'swachh mela' in Jorhat district in collaboration with district administration.

The mela was inaugurated by MP Kamakhya Prasad Tassa in the presence of Jorhat Deputy Commissioner, PHE officials and hundreds of villagers from various parts of Jorhat.

The mela was started with an exhibition on various aspects of cleanliness drive with focus on rural areas.

Speaking on the occasion, Tassa urged the people of Jorhat, particularly to those residing in rural and extreme rural areas that are not access to modern sanitary system, to avail various government schemes for construction of pucca sanitary in each household so as to make Jorhat a clean city.

According to Jorhat DC Virendra Mittal, under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan during last year about 12,600 latrines were installed and this year 24,000 latrines were installed and will install more by next year.

During the program, heads of eight villages of Jorhat were felicitated with Phulon Gamosa, citation and a certificate in recognition for making their village free from open defecation.

Later, a pledge was read out in unison to keep the environment free from pollution in any form...
