TV channels airing Indian content to be suspended by PEMRA sans notice

Islamabad [Pakistan], Oct. 4 :Taking a strict stand over the airing of Indian content in the country, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Tuesday granted power to its chairman, Absar Alam, to cancel or suspend the licenses of companies airing Indian content without providing prior notice.

An order was issued by PEMRA on Monday limiting the amount of airtime allowed for Indian content in Pakistan, imitating the format which India has adopted for the airing of Pakistani content, reports the Dawn.

The announcement had declared that the licenses of companies will be revoked or suspended without a show cause notice or a hearing if Indian content is aired in violation of the order.

The authority further said that it would take a strict action against the airing of all unauthorised content and TV channels in the country starting October 15 in accordance with section 30(3).

Last month, PEMRA had said that it would launch a crackdown on the illegal Indian DTH and airing of excessive foreign content by TV channels and cable operators.
