54 test positive in TN, total tally 1,683

Chennai, April 23 : Tamil Nadu on Thursday reported 54 persons testing positive for coronavirus infection over the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 1,683, the state Health Department said.

A total 90 Covid-19 patients were discharged from various hospitals in the state taking the total number of persons discharged to 752.

Currently, 106 asymptomatic passengers from highly affected countries are being quarantined in facilities near airport and 1,787 are under hospital isolation.

State capital leads in the corona count with 400 positive cases followed by Coimbatore (134) and Tiruppur (110).

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government in order to increase the people's immunity, decided to distribute 'Kabasura Kudineer' powder -- a traditional Siddha medicine -- to households in the COVID-19 containment zones.

The government has started the project called 'Arogyam' on the advice of experts and has started distributing a powder mix of Kabasura Kudineer and Nilavembu Kudineer.

The government has clarified that this is not the treatment process for COVID-19, but only to boost immunity.

The state government on Thursday announced permission for MNREGA and construction works in rural areas.

The government also allowed state and Central government offices to function with 33 per cent staff strength for maintenance of essential services and MNREGA works related to irrigation and water conservation in rural areas, excluding containment and red zones.

The government ordered that MNREGA workers should be provided with masks and the number of workers should not exceed one-third of the number that is needed while maintaining social distance.

Meanwhile authorities have closed a long stretch of the Anna Salai to prevent traffic.

Traffic from Anna Flyover to Wallajah Road-Anna Statue junction has been closed.
