Another setback for India as shuttler Srikanth bows out of Rio Olympics

Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Aug.17 : India's floundering campaign in the ongoing Rio Olympics received a further setback as ace shuttler Kidambi Srikanth crashed out of the prestigious quadrennial tournament after going down against Lin Dan of China in the men's singles event here on Wednesday.

After suffering a crushing first-game defeat, Srikanth rebounded strongly to win the second game before finally losing the tie-breaker.

The world number 11, who was the lone Indian in fray in the men's singles, posted a 6-21, 21-11, 18-21 defeat against his Chinese compatriot in the quarter-final contest that lasted for one hour and four minutes.

Earlier in a day, PV Sindhu produced a gritty performance under tremendous pressure to overcame Chinese world number two Yihan Wang 22-20, 21-19 to reach the semifinals of the women's singles event.

India, who have sent their largest-ever contingent of 119 athletes in Rio Olympics, are yet to open their medal account in the ongoing Summer Games.
