First Manipur Technical University inaugurated

Takyelpat (Manipur), Aug.6 : Manipur Governor V. Shanmuganathan has inaugurated the first Manipur Technical University which was established by an Ordinance of the Government of Manipur on April 23, 2016.

The inauguration took place at the State Academy of Training, Takyelpat campus. The Manipur Technical University is the only technical university of Manipur. All technical institutions of the state are to be affiliated to the university. At present, the university proposes to offer B-Tech courses in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electronics and communication engineering and computer science and engineering.

The Manipur Technical University will serve as the new hub of technical education where talents and opportunities come together for a better future of Manipur, said Governor V Shanmuganathan.

The university is the second technical university in the northeast region with the first being in Assam.

The governor said that the higher education sector offers an ocean of opportunities for youth as India increasingly move towards a knowledge driven society.

"I am happy to learn that 34 students from the state have already joined civil engineering, 27 in electronic engineering, 27 in computer science, 22 students in electronics and communication engineering and 18 students in mechanical engineering under Vice-Chancellor Vanid Joshi," he said.

The governor also observed although the university has come to existence in Manipur, it is still not enough at this stage and added that there is a need to grow further with improving the quality of the university and aim for many achievements.

"The team of Vanid Jushi who is the Vice Chancellor, including the professors and assistant professors, together need to own and run the university with more concentration for the future," he said.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said the government is trying to improve the education scenario and make the state an education hub by opening such institutes.

The function was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Education Minister Kh Ratankumar, Social Welfare Minister Ak Mirabai Devi, PWD Minister Ksh Biren, Agriculture Minister Abdul Nasir and Khangabok MLA O Landhoni.

The main vision and objective of Manipur Technical University could be to produce technologists, IT managers, IT experts of high caliber, capable of contributing towards the development of home grown technical innovative ideas in Manipur which will not only benefit Manipur but neighboring states, including neighboring countries like Myanmar, Bangladesh etc.
