Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir)[India], Dec. 27 : The Urs (death anniversary) of Sufi saint Hazrat Syed Mohammad Janbaz Wali was recently observed in Baramulla.
Wali's Urs falls during Rabi-ul-Awal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. On the occasion this year, a large number of devotees spent their time reciting verses from the holy Quran and prayed for peace and prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Kashmir Valley is known as the valley of sufis and saints. Many of them played significant roles in spreading Islam in Kashmir. Hazrat Janbaz Wali is regarded as one among the great Sufi scholars who came from Iran 600 years ago. His main aim was to spread the message of peace, love and humanity, the basic message of Islam. Devotees also placed holy sheets of cloth on his mausoleum. "We would like to say that may God give us success and fortune through this saint," said Irfan Lone. Sufism defines Kashmir society. Such was the influence of Sufism that it constituted superstructure and sub-structure values and belief systems in the people of Kashmir.
