New Delhi [India], Mar.5 : A spokesman of former U.S. president Barack Obama has refuted current President Donald Trump's accusations that the Trump Tower was wiretapped prior to presidential elections.
"A cardinal rule of the Obama administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice," Obama spokesman Kevin Lewis issued a statement on Twitter yesterday.
"As part of that practice, neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S.
citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false," he added. Similarly former deputy national security adviser to Obama, Ben Rhodes, in a tweet, said that presidents cannot order a wiretap.
"No President can order a wiretap. Those restrictions were put in place to protect citizens from people like you," he said. Earlier, Trump, in series of tweets, alleged that the Trump Tower was tapped even before election victory.
He likened the action to being as bad as the Watergate scandal. "Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!," the President tweeted. "How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!," he said. Reiterating that Obama's 'people' were definitely behind the leak, Trump stated that some of the leaks are really serious as they are related to national security.
However, Trump did not offer any evidence for his claim. Last month, Trump told Fox News that reports of his calls with the leaders of Mexico and Australia were caused by leaks from "Obama people." Trump's administration has claimed to have been plagued by leaks within his administration to the media.
