Punjab polls: Congress gets majority in 117-member Assembly

Chandigarh (Punjab) [India] Mar. 11 : The Congress party today made a resounding comeback in Punjab after a gap of a decade, with 77 seats in the 117-member Assembly.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won less than it was expected to, though its 20 seats on debut do make it the second largest party in the Punjab Assembly.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance fared the worst, with 18 seats. With the ruling party facing a huge defeat, Chief Minister and Akali patriarch Parkash Singh Badal said he would be submitting his resignation to the Governor tomorrow.

"I thank everyone in Punjab for their immense faith and support. This is a mandate for a brighter future for Punjab and it's youth," Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said.

He also congratulated Punjab Congress chief Capt. Amarinder Singh, who won the Patiala assembly seat and under who, the party has taken a lead over the BJP and the AAP.
