Record cash and liquor seized during fifth phase of UP polls: EC

New Delhi, [India], Feb. 27 : A record amount of cash, liquor, drugs and jewellery was seized during the fifth phase of Uttar Pradesh (UP) Assembly elections, said the Election Commission on Monday.

"The seizure, which is record for this particular region was, Rs. 4.21 crore of cash, 2.20 lakh litres of liquor worth Rs. 6.43 crore, drugs worth Rs. 47.7 lakh and jewellery worth Rs.53.36 lakh," said Deputy Election Commissioner Vijay Kumar Dev at a press conference.

"Total in Uttar Pradesh till date is Rs. 115.43 crore of cash, 20.65 lakh litres of liquor worth Rs. 58.85 crore, drugs worth Rs. 7.92 crore and Rs. 25.15 crore worth of gold and silver," he added. Kumar also mentioned that strict measures were taken for the implementation of the Election Commission's Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the elections.

"We had maintained right from the start a fierce implementation of the Model Code of Conduct and 1,09,805 defacements in the form of posters, banners and hoardings were removed within 72 hours of the coming into force of the MCC," he said.

Voting was held today in 11 districts and 57.36 percent of voter turnout was recorded till 5 p.m..
