Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Aug.19 : Indian wrestler Sandeep Tomar's hopes of bringing himself back into the medal contention received a major jolt as he was crashed out of men's freestyle 57 kg competition at the ongoing Rio Olympics here on Friday.
The 25-year-old Indian debutant got eliminated from the prestigious quadrennial games after his pre-quarterfinal opponent Viktor Lebedev of Russia was beaten 1-6 against Iran's Hassan Rahimi in their last-eight contest at Carioca Arena.
According to the Repechage system, Tomar would have got a chance of clinching a bronze medal for the country had Lebedev reached the finals of the competition.
Earlier in a day, Tomar, who was expected to bring glory for the country in the absence of embattled wrestler Narsingh Yadav at the ongoing Rio Olympics, suffered a 3-7 defeat at the hands of the Russian in the round of 16.
