Serena, Murray storm into US Open third round

Johannesburg [South Africa], Sept.2 : Serena Williams and Andy Murray stormed into the third round of the US Open with thumping straight-sets victories at Flushing Meadows.

While top-ranked Serena clinched her 306th Grand Slam women's singles victory with a 6-3, 6-3 thrashing of fellow American Vania King, Murray overcame tenacious Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 to progress through to the next round.

With the win, Serena has equalled the record set by legendary Martina Navratilova for the most Grand Slam singles wins in woman's history.

Meanwhile, two-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka advanced to the third round with a 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 victory over 243rd-ranked Italian Alessandro Giannessi.

Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 men's singles champion, also reached the next round following 7-6 (7/5), 6-3, 6-2 victory over 19th seeded American Steve Johnson.

The Argentine, who battled back a series of career-threatening injuries, entered the tournament as a wildcard after he won silver in the Rio Olympics.
