Traffic clogged in central Delhi as revellers flood India Gate

New Delhi, Jan 1 : Traffic came to a complete halt and roads were choked with vehicles on central Delhi roads on Monday as more than one lakh revellers gathered at the India Gate to celebrate the New Year.

Traffic was thrown out of gear at all the roads leading out from India Gate radial which were clogged with heavy volume of motorists.

A Traffic Police note advised commuters to avoid the area as no parking space was available.

"Traffic will remain very heavy near India Gate C-Hexagon due to gathering of more than 1 lakh pedestrians and heavy volume of motorists.

No parking available around India Gate. Advised to avoid India Gate and take alternate route," the advisory read.

"Heavy Traffic at India Gate, more than 50 Traffic officials are present and regulating the traffic," read another tweet on the microblogging site posted by the traffic police.

As the crowd surged during the peak evening hours, many commuters shunned the public transport and chose to travel by metro train, making the stations unusually crammed on the first day of the year when many offices were closed.

Several metro stations of central Delhi areas like Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, and Rajiv Chowk saw metros running jam-packed with passengers.
