Tokyo gold medallist Pramod Bhagat once had no money to buy racket

Patna, Sep 5 : India's badminton player Pramod Bhagat, who won a gold medal in the Tokyo Paralympics in SL3 category, did not have enough money to buy even a badminton racket in early stages of his career.

Bhagat, a native of Bihar's Hajipur town in Vaishali district had natural talent in sports.

"He used to beat any person in the city during his childhood.

When he was just five years old, he became a polio victim. As our financial state was not good and my sister Kishuni Devi and her husband Kailash Bhagat did not have a child, they adopted Pramod and took him to Bhubaneswar," said Rama Bhagat, the father of Pramod Bhagat.

"Initially we did not have money to buy a badminton racket for him.

Then his uncle and aunt managed to buy a racket for him and he started training for the game," he added.

"Pramod completed his class 12 examination from Bhubaneswar followed by ITI.

As he was continuously practicing badminton, he qualified for the Tokyo Paralympic games," he said.

Suresh Bhagat, the brother of Pramod Bhagat, said, "We are very happy with the efforts of Promod.

He won the gold medal for our country and the state. At the same time, the sports infrastructure of Bihar is extremely bad. Hence, many talented players are unable to play in national events."

Pramod Bhagat managed to beat Daniel Bethell of England in the men's singles (SL3) final on Saturday and won the gold medal for India.

Wife ecstatic after Noida DM makes it to Paralympics badminton final

New Delhi, Sep 4 : Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate Suhas LY's wife Ritu Suhas is ecstatic after her husband secured a place in the final of the badminton event at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics.

Ritu also told IANS why she did not watch even a single match of her husband in the last six years.

Suhas, currently World No.3 in SL4 category, outplayed Indonesia's Fredy Setiawan 21-9, 21-15 in just 31 minutes to reach the title clash.

Even if he goes down in the final, his silver will make him the first-ever IAS officer to win a medal at the Paralympics.

Ritu, who is also an ADM (administration) in Ghaziabad, said that this is a happy moment, not just for her, but for the entire country.

Explaining the reason for not seeing her husband in action in the last six years, Ritu said that she feels nervous thinking what could be the result, as her husband gets completely involved in the game.

She also said that the credit for this achievement goes to Suhas only, and no one else.

Ritu, however, said that she prayed for the success of all those representing India in Tokyo, and not just her husband.

Suhas will now take on Lucas Mazur of France in the final to be played at 6.15 am on Sunday.

Ritu further said that Suhas worked hard to reach this point.

Despite being in government service, he found time for his game and trained from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight. His coach also worked very hard on him, she said.

"My husband has always given priority to sports, which is why he is where he is today.

I pray to God that he moves ahead in life," she said.

"It is his passion for the game that has taken him to this stage.

The whole country is praying for him, and being his wife, I am also praying for him," she added.

Modi, Rahul congratulate Bhavina Patel for winning silver

New Delhi, Aug 29 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday congratulated Bhavina Patel for winning silver medal in Table Tennis at Paralympics games in Tokyo.

Modi tweeted, "The remarkable Bhavina Patel has scripted history! She brings home a historic Silver medal.

Congratulations to her for it. Her life journey is motivating and will also draw more youngsters towards sports. #Paralympics."

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, too, congratulated her.

"Congratulations to Bhavina Patel for winning the #Silver.

India applauds your achievement. You've done the nation proud," Rahul tweeted.

Bhavina Patel has made history for India on the National Sports Day by becoming the first Table Tennis player from the country to win a medal in the Paralympic games.

Her silver win is India's first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games and the 13th overall -- 4 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze.

Bhavina, ranked 12th in the world, had made an incredible run to the final by beating the gold and silver medallist of the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

On Sunday, she found Zhou, winner at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 games, too strong to handle and lost 3-0 (7-11, 5-11, 6-11) in a 19-minute encounter in women's singles Class 4.

The 34-year-old Bhavina, who lost to the best player in the world and the one who is far more experienced and superior to her, became the first Indian Table Tennis player to win a medal at the Paralympics.

She also became only the second Indian female athlete to win a medal in the Paralympics after Deepa Malik, who bagged silver in Shotput F43 in 2016.

Bhavina, in her maiden Paralympic Games, had lost to Zhou in her opening preliminary round Group A match too.

Ex-coach has last laugh over AFI as golden boy Neeraj Chopra lands up at his residence

Bengaluru/Pune Aug 24 : Neeraj Chopra, the heartthrob of the nation, the winner of the only gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in Javelin throw, on Tuesday visited the home of his former coach and Indian army subedar, Kashinath Naik in Koregaon Park area of Pune.

Athletics Federation of India President Adille Sumariwalla had earlier issued a statement that Kashinath Naik had never trained Neeraj.

As Neeraj came to the house of Kashinath Naik and spent almost an hour with his family members, Naik had the last laugh.

Adille Sumariwalla had said he has never heard about Kashinath Naik and Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo Javelin medallist has never trained under him.

"Whatever we do, it is for the nation.

I don't bother to comment or worry about allegations against me. I don't want the money either. (Karnataka government has announced Rs 10 lakh cash award to him for coaching Neeraj Chopra). Neeraj has asked me to be calm," Kashinath explained to IANS.

Neeraj was welcomed by Chaitra, coach Naik's wife by performing aarti (Hindu ritual to welcome winners by warding off evil spirits).

Neeraj spent quality time chatting with Naik's sons Daksh and Laksh, who also sport Neeraj's style. He also played with the family's pet dog Rocky.

"I was hesitant to invite Neeraj home as now he has become a celebrity.

Neeraj only came forward to say that he would visit my house. I felt so happy. He has not changed a bit. He addressed my wife as 'bhabhi' as he would call her earlier," Kashinath Naik told IANS.

Neeraj Chopra was in Pune to attend the inaugural function of a sports track named after him.

Due to technical reasons, the function was postponed to August 27. "He came home at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday and stayed till 2 p.m. Though we tried to keep it a low key affair, neighbours recognized him and surrounded him for selfies and photos.

Neeraj calmly and happily fulfilled their requests," he stated.

Chaitra, who welcomed Neeraj, shared that she was speechless to see a national star at her residence.

"I can't describe my happiness. He became a little boy with my children. I had cooked Paneer Paratha for him. He ate sweets and drank coffee later," she informed.

Kashinath Naik explained that Neeraj liked Pune Kulfies and he had got them parcelled.

Despite being inundated with praises, after winning the only gold medal for the country, Neeraj had called up Kashinath Naik from Tokyo.

Naik, a subedar in the army, had trained Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra between 2015 and 2017.
