Bihar BJP leaders demand cancellation of Indo-Pak T20 match

Patna, Oct 18 : After the murder of Bihari labourers in Kashmir, BJP leaders are advocating cancellation of upcoming T20 cricket match between India and Pakistan.

Bihar's deputy CM Tarkishore Prasad said: "Under the tense situation it would not be wise to play cricket with Pakistan.

It will give a clear message that India is supporting terrorism. The attack on common people in the Valley is cowardice act of terrorists."

Earlier in the day, Union Minister Giriraj Singh also echoed the same sentiment.

He said that the ruling and opposition parties share the same stand on this issue -- to cancel the indo-Pak cricket match.

Sushil Kumar Modi, the BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP said: "Militants trying to create fear among common people so that they leave the Valley.

Killing unarmed civilians is the cowardly act of militants."

Meanwhile, Rajiv Shukla the BCCI vice president said: "Under the laws of International Cricket Council (ICC), the pre-scheduled cricket match cannot be cancelled."

The militants of Kashmir gunned down two labouers Raja Rishidev and Yogendra Rishidev in Anantnag district while Chunchun Rishidev was seriously injured in the firing on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Kashmiri militants killed a Golgappa vendor, Arvind Kumar Shah in Srinagar and a carpenter named Sagir Ahmed of Uttar Pradesh.

Teju Das, the father of Chunchun Rishidev said: "The contractor of Chunchun was not giving salaries for the past few months.

He was staying there to take the salary and then return to native village in Araria district."

Like the chess queen, AICF indulging in purge; ‘no’, says AICF

Chennai, Sep 25 : The present administration of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) is like the powerful queen on a chess board, hunting down the opponents, allege chess officials.

The latest cause of their complaint is the three-year suspension handed out to AICF Joint Secretary and International Master (IM) Atanu Lahiri, and the disaffiliation of Madhya Pradesh State Level Chess Association at the Special Meeting of the AICF General Body held in Jaipur on September 23.

Strongly refuting the allegations, AICF Treasurer Naresh Sharma termed them as 'ridiculous', adding that action is being taken based on complaints.

"The AICF actions are vindictive.

Those who had contested the elections and those who had voted against the current management are being purged," R.M.

Dongre, President, FIDE Zone 3.7, told IANS.

According to Dongre, the AICF had sent the notice and other papers relating to the Special General Body Meeting held in Jaipur, which he was entitled to attend.

In a letter to AICF President, Dongre had said that a Special General Body Meeting can be called only for urgent matters and not to clear a huge agenda where vindictive actions are sought against state chess associations and individuals.

Incidentally, Dongre himself faced action by the AICF and global chess body FIDE and lost his post first.

Later, FIDE reinstated him to the post after he cited the rules.

Speaking about his three-year suspension, Lahiri told IANS: "I was the only chess player of good standing in the AICF governing body.

I am also the only chess coach to be engaged by the chess bodies of six nations."

Lahiri said that he would continue to organise chess tournaments and coach players while continuing his fight.

In June this year, the AICF had sent Lahiri a show-cause notice, listing out various charges against him.

In July this year, dismissing the charges, Lahiri in his reply had in turn sent a lengthy complaint to Prime Minister Narendra Modi against AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan.

And now Lahiri has been suspended for three years from the post of AICF Joint Secretary.

Lahiri, the Chief Executive Officer of Bengal Chess Association (BCA), belonged to the rival camp of Chauhan and was elected for the Joint Secretary's post.

Earlier, the AICF had disaffiliated the BCA and in its place affiliated the Sara Bangla Daba Sangstha.

"A court in West Bengal had issued an injunction order against AICF from interfering with BCA.

The disaffiliation of BCA is a violation of the court order. The case for violation of court order is expected to come up for hearing early next month," Lahiri said.

On the disaffiliation of Madhya Pradesh State Level Chess Association, its Secretary Kapil Saxena told IANS: "Till recently, everything was fine between the state association and the AICF.

Only during the last two months the complaints were sent to the AICF against us. I had told the AICF that the complaints were motivated."

He said there has been no official communication from the AICF about the disaffiliation.

"Out of the 50 districts, chess associations in 40 districts are affiliated to us," Saxena added.

When contacted, AICF Treasurer Sharma told IANS: "The purge allegation is ridiculous.

The suspension of Lahiri was decided following due process. There are serious complaints against him and an FIR has been lodged for forgery against Lahiri in Delhi."

Sharma said the AICF is headquartered in Delhi and hence the police complaint has been lodged there against Lahiri, who lives in West Bengal.

He said Ranjan Mohanty, President of the All Orissa Chess Association, has been appointed as the AICF Joint Secretary in place of Lahiri.

"We are not purging those who contested or voted against us in the elections.

The state bodies of Jammu and Kashmir and Kerala did not vote for us in the elections. No action has been taken against them," Sharma said.

According to him, there were complaints against the Madhya Pradesh State Level Chess Association and hence action was taken.

Bio-bubble to prevent Covid in sportsmen not completely impregnable: Experts

New Delhi, Sep 24 : The bio-bubble arrangement that limits sportspersons' contact with the outside world and safeguards them from contracting Covid-19 is not completely impregnable, experts said on Friday.

A bio-bubble is a new concept introduced during Covid-19 for sportspersons and their support staff.

This essentially involves instituting protocols to be followed during hotel stay, travel or transportation to venues, training sessions, actual sports events and recreational spots.

It has been a great success at the recently concluded Olympic Games in Tokyo, with very few cases of Covid getting reported.

However, it has affected other games such as cricket, more recently the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Durand Cup football tournament.

"A bio-bubble or biosecure bubble is a new protocol put together to mitigate the risk of the SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission during sporting events.

As the name suggests, a bubble means and entails isolation of players, staff and other related personnel within strict controlled physical locations to ensure 'no' or 'limited' contact with folks outside the bubble," Veena P.

Menon, Professor of Clinical Virology, Amrita School of Medicine, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi, told IANS.

IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad's seamer Thangarasu Natarajan has recently tested positive for Covid, along with six close contacts, ahead of the team's match against Delhi Capitals in the UAE on Wednesday.

However, the match took place as scheduled.

Incidentally, the tournament was halted in May this year in India over Covid scare.

Similarly, the Army Red team were on Thursday forced to withdraw from their Durand Cup quarterfinal against FC Bengaluru United after Covid cases were detected in their squad.

The match has been called off.

According to media reports, to maintain the bio-bubble, the players and staff are even provided separate check-in counters at airports when they travel between matches, besides best healthcare facilities for players, including the option to airlift them to safety.

So how can the breach happen?

"We must recognise that the bubbles are protective to an extent, but they're not completely impregnable.

It is because Covid transmission is occurring due to aerosol spread, not just droplet spread," K. Srinath Reddy, President of the Public Health Foundation of India, New Delhi, told IANS.

"So, if the players/staff move for example in a hotel corridor, where somebody else might have discharged the virus, and as clouds are floating around, this can be a problem," he added.

Further, while masks offer a great deal of protection, there are times when people take off their masks.

For example, while dining indoors without much air flow. So there are opportunities for exposure. In such cases, vaccination helps prevent serious infection, hospitalisation and death.

According to Vivek Nangia, Principal Director and Head, Pulmonology, at Max Hospital, New Delhi, the latent period of the Covid virus may be the reason for the bio-bubble breach.

In the bio-bubble concept, players/staff must get themselves tested negative and then only they are allowed to enter into a hotel or into a complex with people who have already tested negative, and then one stays there as a policy and does not move out of it.

Since there is no interaction with the outside world, the possibility of catching the infection becomes lower.

"We all know that this virus also has a latent period, which could be anything up to 7 to 10 days.

So somebody who's been a carrier, despite testing negative, can subsequently develop the illness in spite of not having travelled anywhere," Nangia told IANS.

"The Covid test is usually done on the fourth or the fifth day, but you could be positive even later than that.

Because of the latent period, people can be carriers and then the disease can be detected later," he added.

In addition, there is also the possibility of Covid test reports showing "false negatives among those tested," Neha Gupta, Consultant, Infectious Disease, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, told IANS.

So why did the Tokyo Olympics/Paralympics not turn out to be a super spreader event, as feared?

"Japan's bio bubble system was very strong (during the Games) for which the organisers were praised by the world.

The way they got the Paralympics and Olympics done despite Covid scare was really appreciable," J.P. Singh, the coach of the Indian para powerlifting team, told IANS.

Singh said the players used to get tested (for Covid) everyday and were not allowed to go outside the Games Village.

And if any new team joined, they had to go through a mandatory three-day quarantine period.

"The Japanese are used to wearing masks, even before Covid.

Anybody who catches a cold is supposed to wear a mask in order to protect others. It's part of their civic sense/culture, unlike in India where wearing masks is an imposition," Reddy said.

Yogi sets up SIT to re-investigate murder of Kho-Kho player

Bijnor (UP), Sep 22 : UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered the setting up of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the case of rape and murder of a national level Kho-Kho player.

This comes days after the police said that the national-level player's rape and murder case had been solved.

The victim's family alleged the 24-year-old athlete was raped and killed, while the police have said it was a case of 'murder and attempt to rape'.

The family of the Dalit woman, who was killed and brutalised on September 10 when she was on her way home from a job interview, met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, during an event in Bijnor on Tuesday to seek a re-investigation.

"The Chief Minister promised them protection and sanctioned Rs 5 lakh for the family of the deceased," said Moradabad DIG Shalabh Mathur.

"Following the demands of the woman's family, an SIT has been formed to investigate the case," he told reporters.

The police had earlier said it had solved the crime.

A rope, a shirt with two missing buttons and a slipper had led them to a daily wage labourer who lived near the train tracks where the woman's body was found.

Bijnor SP Dharamveer Singh had said that, "Shahjad, 26, has confessed to his crime."

The police had then said that it was "attempt to rape" and the autopsy report had only found evidence of murder "and no other crime".

Based on the woman's father's complaint, the FIR still mentions rape charges along with those of murder, concealing evidence and offences punishable with life or other imprisonment.

But the woman's family said that when her body was found, her clothes had been pulled down.

Her father had said, "She was a sportsperson.

She was strong. It is difficult to believe that one man, a supposed drug addict, overpowered her by himself. More men could have been present. Her phone is still missing."

The woman was on a call when she was attacked, her cries and screams were recorded by her friend on the other side.

Jaipur to host int’l matches after 8 years; RCA chief thanks Ganguli, Shah

Jaipur, Sep 21 : As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selected Jaipur as one of the venues for its matches, Rajasthan Cricket Association president Vaibhav Gehlot extended his gratitude to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah for giving the desert state a chance to host New Zealand and Sri Lanka teams in November this year and February 2022.

The first T20I between India and New Zealand will be played on November 17 and the 2nd ODI between India and West Indies (50 overs) will be played on February 9, 2022 in SMS Stadium.

International matches will be played in the Pink City after a gap of eight years and would come as a shot in the arm for the RCA which is looking to revive cricketing culture in the state.

It was on October 16, 2013 that an international match was last played in Jaipur when India took on Australia in an ODI match at the Sawai Mansingh (SMS) Stadium.

Vaibhav Gehlot said, "Rajasthan did not get a chance to host an international match for a long time, so after forming the new RCA team, work started to ensure cricket grows in Rajasthan."

"We are coming up with the third largest cricket stadium in Jaipur and are also working on the Jodhpur stadium.

New milestones are being attained. We met BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah dozens of times, made them aware of the situation in Rajasthan and assured of a good event.

We told them that not a single international match has been held in Rajasthan for the last 8 years due to which cricketers and sports lovers are desperate.

After this, the BCCI entrusted Rajasthan with the responsibility of hosting one T20 and one ODI match," he added.

"I would also like to thank CM Ashok Gehlot and Rajasthan speaker CP Joshi who have been extending their blessings to us to take cricket to new heights in the state," he said.

Gehlot added, "Recently I also met Union sports minister Anurag Thakur and instilled confidence that the stadium is ready for international cricket to put up a good show.

Am happy that we got the chance."

Answering a query on how preparations will be completed as November is not far, he said, "Domestic matches are going on continuously in Rajasthan.

In such a situation, the ground and pitch are completely ready. A committee will also be formed for international matches. Whatever is needed, we will try to do it as soon as possible. We have organised international matches and IPL in Rajasthan in the past too under the leadership of Dr CP Joshi.

In such a situation, this time also the entire team of Rajasthan Cricket Association will work together for a good event, so that sports lovers can get a lot of entertainment.

It is anticipated that these events will fuel growth and development in the field of sports," he added.

Serving the Olympians — the Maharaja style

Chandigarh, Sep 8 : The atmosphere was joyous, the occasion truly memorable.

It was the much-awaited dinner hosted by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday for Olympic medallists and participants from the state, and some others, including gold medallist Neeraj Chopra.

Pleasure intermingled with pride, as India's celebration of the Olympic glory continued days after the return of the heroes.

The lawns of the Chief Minister's farmhouse in Mohali were lit up with the spirit of revelry and the aroma of the savouries that Amarinder Singh had painstakingly prepared for his cherished guests.

Amarinder Singh's special touch was unmistakable.

It could be seen (and tasted) in every dish of the lavish spread on the table. And the smile of satisfaction on his face, even after hours of hard work as the chef of the moment, was enviable.

"I started at 11 in the morning.

Most of it was done by around 5 p.m., and then it was time for some final touches. But I loved every minute of it," said the Chief Minister, with the enjoyment of it all sparkling in his eyes.

"They (the sportspersons) worked so hard to win us glory, what I have done for them is nothing in comparison," he remarked, looking his usual dapper self as he greeted the guests personally, with no sign of fatigue from all those hours of cooking and supervising the arrangements.

And the hospitality of Amarinder Singh clearly knew no bounds, as he could be seen serving his guests personally, straight out of the 'patilas' in which he had cooked his choicest dishes earlier.

"The food always tastes better if served direct from the cooking vessel," he remarked -- his knowledge of food no less sharp than his cooking skills.

On the menu was nothing short of a royal feast - Mutton Khara Pishori, Long Elaichi Chicken, Aloo Korma, Dal Masri, Murg Korma, Dugani Biryani and Zarda Rice (sweet dish).

Hockey Captain Manpreet Singh (DSP Punjab police) said he had heard about the Maharaja's cooking but what he savoured today exceeded his expectations.

His personal favourite? Aloo! Discus thrower Kamalpreet said she was truly impressed by both the food and the hospitality of the Chief Minister.

"It was rich (quite a bit of ghee) but it was excellent food," to quote Neeraj Chopra.

Besides Olympic javelin throw gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, the special guests for the evening included Olympics bronze medallist hockey players Manpreet Singh (Captain), Harmanpreet Singh (Vice Captain), Mandeep Singh, Hardik Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh, Shamsher Singh, Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh, Varun Kumar and Simranjit Singh.

The Chief Minister has already announced Rs 2.51 crore for each of them.

Women hockey semi finalist Gurjit Kaur and Reena Khokhar, reserve player Krishan Bahadur Pathak and Olympics finalist athlete Kamalpreet Kaur, also among the guests, have been awarded Rs 50 lakh each.

The Chief Minister had also earlier announced Rs 21 lakh for Olympics participants race-walker Gurpreet Singh and shooter Angadveer Singh Bajwa, who were also invited for the dinner.
