ISL champs Chennaiyin sign Jamaican international Duwayne Kerr

New Delhi [India], Aug.30 : Indian Super League defending champions Chennaiyin FC on Tuesday announced the signing of Jamaican international goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr for the upcoming third edition of the ISL.

The 29-year-old from Westmoreland, Jamaica, joins Chennaiyin on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract with Iceland top tier outfit Stjarnan.

Kerr started his career at hometown club Reno and spent two seasons there before moving to another Jamaican club Portmore United in 2007.

Following a four-year spell with Portmore, Kerr earned his first move abroad as he joined Strommen in the Norway second tier.

After a two-year stint there, Kerr signed for Sarpsborg in the Norwegian top division and spent four seasons there before the move to Iceland.

The custodian made 14 starts for Stjarnan with the latest one coming last Saturday before sealing his move to Chennaiyin.

Kerr made his international debut for Jamaica in 2007 and has made 15 appearances. He has represented Jamaica in North American Gold Cup and was part of their squad in the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Copa America with two starts in 2015 against Uruguay and Paraguay.

"Duwayne is a quality goalkeeper with plenty of experience in Europe and international level. He will have a very important role in our title defence," said Chennaiyin FC manager Marco Materazzi. Commenting on his appointment, Kerr said,"I would like to thank coach Materazzi and the owners for giving me this opportunity at Chennaiyin FC.

I am really looking forward to start a new chapter of my career in India and hope to help Chennaiyin keep the trophy.

Most recently, Kerr played the second half of Jamaica's historic 2-1 win over Copa America champions Chile in an international friendly in May earlier this year.
